As one of the most trusted Refractive Cataract surgeons in the Southeast, Dr. Choi has performed thousands of refractive surgeries. Currently, Dr. Choi is the only surgeon in Alabama providing refractive surgery utilizing the Zeiss lasers: VisuMax femtosecond laser and MEL 80 excimer laser. Dr. Choi is the only surgeon in Alabama with the technology to perform the cutting edge small incision lenticule extraction, or SMILE procedure. SMILE gives the benefit of both LASIK and PRK because there are no flap complications or pain as associated with PRK.Education
In 2001, he received his medical degree from Loma Linda University in California. He then completed his internship in general surgery at Loma Linda in 2002, where he received the prestigious "Intern of the Year" award given by the Plastic Surgery Department. He then pursued an ophthalmology residency at Loma Linda under the mentorship of one of the leading cataract/refractive surgeons in the world, Dr. Howard Gimbel. Furthermore, he complemented his high-volume refractive surgical practice with a practical mini-fellowship in refractive surgery in Greece from the surgeon who coined the term "LASIK".Dr. Choi is a highly skilled, microscopic surgeon who performs advanced and intricate procedures such as pediatric implantable collamer lens (ICL) surgery. He was the first surgeon in the world to perform simultaneous, bilateral pediatric (ICL) surgery. He presented this landmark case at the 2006 Staar User Meeting at the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He was also the first surgeon in North America to perform a pediatric ICL surgery. Subsequently, he has shared his knowledge with other surgeons who have performed pediatric (ICL) surgery in the United States.

Horrible experience with Dr. Choi. He did my cataract surgery back in November of 2021. He used a different lens than the one recommended my optometrist, and my eyes have been so angry, and my vision has been horrible. Dr. Choi’s solution was to do laser & lasik, at no cost to me, to try to improve my vision. Also, if I refused, then we were at an impasse. I sought options from 3 separate surgeons, and all agreed that they had never used this specific lens in any of their patients. A surgeon (a cornea specialist) at the Callahan Eye Foundation has removed & replaced my left lens, after a thorough examination that determined there was absolutely nothing wrong with my cornea. I will have the second one done May 31st. I have peace in one eye now, and my vision is improving daily. This has been a nightmare, and Dr. Choi kept insisting that everything was good & that I should be grateful for the vision I had! Mental anguish for 7 months. Sad.

I am an interventional cardiologist from Florida and I had very bad near vision with astigmatism, and my wife is a retired RN who had difficulty reading. I researched for about 2 weeks for the best opthalmologist to correct my and my wife's vision. I would have traveled to anywhere in the United States since it involves our vision. Luckily, the best candidate I found was Dr Choi, who was only a 5 hour drive away. My wife and I went to Dr Choi for consultation. We were lucky to get appointments quickly during the pandemic. Initially I thought we were going to get the SMILE procedure, but Dr Choi recommended intraocular lens replacement. Both of us eventually got our vision corrected by intraocular lens implants. Our procedures went perfectly and I now have perfect vision. I am also a consultant for the FAA and I have been recommending Dr Choi to the pilots who want vision correction. Dr. Choi is an excellent surgeon. I had cataracts removed and astigmatism corrected in both eyes. My vision is very good. My dependency on glasses has been greatly reduced. Great bedside manner - very calming, answers questions, spends plenty of time with patients. He even prayed with me before the surgery. Beautiful office. His office is always crowded and that is because of his excellent expertise and personality. Staff is OK. I do trust him to do further surgery if necessary.

Had Lasik surgery from Dr. Choi he was very professional and answered any questions. Was scheduled for surgery the following week. Surgery was quick and I'm in my third week of recovery. My eyesight went from a prescription -2.75/-3 to 20/20. Money very well spent. Would recommend anyone wanting or thinking about Lasik to him. Very nice man.
